stronger health service Over the last ten years in Knowsley people are living longer and we have more NHS resources since Labour came to office St Helens And Knowsley Hospitals NHS Trust has: * 27 more consultants between 1997 and 2005 * 111 more doctors in training between 1997 and 2005 * 103 more nurses between 1997 and 2005 Knowsley PCT has a £105,400,000 increase in cash terms between 2004 and 2008 Across the borough, this has led to people living longer: * 2.4 years increase in male life expectancy from 71.5 to 73.9 * 1 year increase in female life expectancy from 77.4 to 78.4 Since Labour came to office in 1997, across the country we have: * Record number of students in higher education * 85,000 more nurses * 32,000 more doctors * Brought back matrons to hospital wards * NHS Direct offering free convenient patient advice * Inpatient waiting lists down by over half a million since 1997 * Free breast cancer screening for all women aged between 50-70 * Heart disease deaths down by 150,000 and cancer deaths down by 50,000 |
